you will love it. its really beautiful. prices are really really low for meals (it was approx between £3 and £7 for a meal when i went last august, and we got like 14 beers for £7). if you eat right in the old town then it will be a little more expensive.
to get to auchwitz you get the train to oswiem from the main station and it takes a few hours. get off at oswiem and get the bus from outside the station to auchwitz(its walking distance but easier to get the bus, you can walk back when you know the way). when you get off the bus face the way the bus was going when stopped and walk forward you will see it after a few mins on the right. you dont need an organised trip or a tour guide really you can just walk around at your own pace.
dont be tempted by men offering to give you lifts in the car to auchwitz and give you a tour at krakow station, these are conmen.
If you stay a little out of the old town it is a lot cheaper but you can walk around the whole city there is no need for public transport. Prosser=please, gen queer=thank you-phonetic polish to get you started.
it is so much new and old in the same city, it is a big city, and people are very friendly, there are a lot of them speaking English and German.
prices are great, in downtown you can walk for ours, and absolutely don’t miss the visit to Wawel Castle - history, art
also in winter it can get very cold, but in any bar you go we can have a hot strong beer with different flavors or some vodka, interesting taste, you should try it.
Enjoy your trip!!
yes, its easy to get around, lots of buses and trams in th city. there are many students in krakow who speak english so you shouldnt have a problem when asking for help or directions. prices are fairly cheap in Krakow for most tourists - beer costs between 6-8 zlotys around the main city center, and outside the center 5-6 zl. meals(depends on what and where you want to eat) - McDonalds - around 12 zloty for a big mac, fries and soda, restuarants - you can usually eat a meal for 18-25 zl. (Sphinx, rooster) or a typical polish traditional restuarant for around the same price. there are student restaurants that serve meals for around 15 zl. Taxis - depends on how far you travel - around 15zl for a 10 min drive around the city (daytime). more transport info here =
There are organized trips to Auschwitz from Krakow - (wieliczka salt mine as well)
Hope you enjoy your stay!
