most poland=russia trains pass through Belarus, which expects you to have a visa. Belarus does not have a very good rep for western travellers.
You should be able to go by rail by way of Vilnius, Lithuania. Otherwise, you should consider a bus to cross the Poland/Russia border.
I am an american who lives in Russia.. I hope you know that you need a visa to even enter the Russian territorry. I have traveled many times by train.. I can pretty much promise you that you will pay the same amount on train like you would pay flying. I learned that the hard way. According to what I have been through you CAN NOT go around beliruz.. The triin system is quite easy. But what you need to know is that you Are really looking at a LONG trip.. if you need information on visas, just type in the yahoo.com or what ever you use for a search engine and then typen in Visas for Belirus.. Matter of fact GO to.. click on VISAS. this will give you and insight. as far as the train system goes then go to… You can also go to and you will see train scedules and crap like that..Here is a sight for every thing you need on the Rail Roads Scedules.. I just found this..
